Michael V. Drake, M.D., was appointed chancellor of the University of California, Irvine in July 2005.

Since becoming chancellor, Drake has led the launch of new programs in public health, pharmaceutical sciences, nursing science and the first new public law school in California in more than 40 years. Under his leadership, the campus has added more than 2.5 million square feet of new space, including the 500,000-square-foot UC Irvine Douglas Hospital and the 275,000-square-foot Student Center, both delivered on time and under budget. During his tenure, philanthropic support has topped $100 million each year for the first time in campus history. The campus currently receives more than 50,000 undergraduate applications each year; the median GPA of the 2009 freshman class is 4.0.

UCI’s chancellor will give a “State of the University” address followed by a question and answer session with Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Manuel Gómez.

Keynote Speaker – Developing stem cell-based treatments for spinal cord injury and disease.
Dr. Hans Keirstead, Associate Professor, Anatomy & Neurobiology

Photo of Dr. Hans Keirstead
As humans are made from stem cells, stem cells have the potential to generate every tissue type in the human body. Dr. Keirstead's research team was the first in the world to direct stem cells to become one specific human tissue type, spinal cord tissue, providing virtually unlimited amounts of human spinal cord tissue for use in spinal cord injury treatments. His work forms the basis of the world's first embryonic stem cell based treatment to be approved by the FDA for use in humans.

Dr. Hans Keirstead received his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada and four years of post-doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Keirstead is now an Associate Professor in the Reeve-Irvine Research Center at the University of California Irvine. His research team investigates the cellular biology and treatment of spinal cord trauma as well as other diseases of the nervous system. He is currently Co-Director of the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center, Director of the UCI Africa Initiative, and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of California Stem Cell.
